10 Year Anniversary Fan Expansion

Page history last edited by umondy 3 years, 2 months ago

In the summer of 2002, Hasbro released Star Wars Epic Duels upon the world.  Fans across the globe have been discussing, tweaking and adding their own custom creations to the board game ever since.  In 2009, at the New York City Toy Fair, Hasbro teased fans with a demo expansion to Epic Duels, but unfortunately, that expansion never came to fruition, and no official expansion has been created by Hasbro to date.  In 2012, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the release of this board game, fans at the Epic Duels Forum took it upon themselves to correct this corporate injustice.  Fans came together to vote on the best of available custom add-ons to release as an unofficial fan expansion to Epic Duels.  Over the course of several months, forum members intensely discussed, debated and ultimately voted on the 12 best characters and decks, and 2 best maps for the expansion.  There are two different sets in the expansion: Custom Set and Tournament Set.

10YA Custom Set

The Custom Set contains 12 custom decks and 2 custom maps intended to be combined with the original Hasbro game and will immediately expand your Epic Duels experience with many of the most familiar faces like Lando, Qui-Gon, Grievous and Tarkin.  The project started by deciding on the 12 best characters (though the available decks for those characters was kept in mind), and moved on from there to find the 12 best decks available for those characters, and eventually considered the best available maps that weren't already included in another custom expansion.  What follows should be a great starting point if you're new to custom decks, as they are considered some of the best available custom add-ons, as voted on by the then 10-years-old Epic Duels online community.

10YA Tournament Set

The Tournament Set is an extension of the 10YA Custom Set, containing the same 12 custom decks plus the original 12 Hasbro decks.  The difference is, some of these 24 decks are modified in order to make all of them as close as possible to the same power level, while intended to remain as true to the original decks as possible.  While these modifications were geared towards use in "League of Legends" style tournaments, they also provide alternatives to those who are tired of the over-powered Obi-Wan or the under-powered Jango.  Modifications were intensely discussed at the Epic Duels Forum, and were ultimately tested for balance before being implemented.  The below are the .pdfs you need to convert the original set and 10YA Custom Set into a 24-deck Tournament Set.

On the General Grievous deck, the “YOU LOSE JEDI” card has some text problems – it says “Play when Card is attacking” and the character name is shown (below the picture) as “New Card”.

- 10YA Custom Set for Vassal is currently updated with version 1.8
- 10YA Tournament Set is updated with version 1.3.
- The .PDFs for the 10YA Custom Set Complete and for Grievous have been updated to correct the error that JeffS pointed out.

- 10YA Tournament Set updated with version 1.4. This should be final unless there are any errors or anything. Many art updates, plus a smaller file by deleting duplicate images.
- 10YA Tournament Set .PDFs (same as what's in Vassal version 1.4) made available.

-10YA Custom Set updated with version 1.8.
-10YA Tournament Set updated with version 1.5

The reason for the updates: Finally figured out how to have the version reflected when you open Vassal. Not a big deal but version control is important with so many versions. I don't expect any further changes unless Rich or Sultan modify the text on Asajj's DOUBLE SABER STRIKE cards to clarify.

10YA Tournament Set updated with version 1.6. We made some adjustments but will not change this version for at least a year, possibly not ever.

I like some of the 10YA changes. Vader, Obi-Wan, Maul & Luke are spot on. But, the shooters are still not right. You've removed Flamethrower which is bad. You should have just modified Sniper Shot; Zam only needs 3 cards. This issue with the shooters are the Basic decks and the HP's.

You used a premise of not changing the HP and Basic decks. But, instead you broke some of the decks by dumping cards. So, which is worse?

I think the Emperor's 'You Will Die' being modified x2 and no Royal Command essentially ruins the deck. As polarizing as YWD is, it works and shouldn't have been changed. He's one of the most powerful characters and now the deck is much less than that. Yoda was untouched and I just think The Emperor is in his class and deserved to stay top tier.

I'd like to see a 20YA set correct the underlying issues with the 3 shooter decks and restore the Emperor's deck.

my 2 cents.

I know back when I fixed my basic decks that I had some of the same feelings you have about the 10Ya changes. I used some of them and some from another source somewhere on the wiki and are quite happy with it. Can't remember everything I changed would have to look it up. I definately know I didn't toy with Maul, changed Yodas attacks to an A8 and changed both of the Fett's decks to a Yellow++ deck.

I definately didn't mess with Obi or Palpatine as I love them both the way they are.

Definately would be interested to see how an updated version would look like.

I think the FLAMETHROWER card is quite weak but it is a signature Jango move. Then again, so is KAMINO SABER DART but he didn't have one in the original game. I sometimes wish we'd have just made the FLAMETHROWER do 4 damage instead of 2 but I wouldn't personally be in favor of reducing Zam's cards down to 3.

I agree about Emperor but a lot of people felt strongly that the deck SHOULD be essentially ruined, because they felt that YWD was a Negative Play Experience. The changes do the job of bringing him to a Tier 2 level as well as address what is a YWD problem for some. If we're not touching YWD, I don't have a lot of ideas about how to weaken him.

Obi wan is very overpowered. Even with 5 attack points taken away his deck is still very good. Blue Deck, 5 attack cards. I believe he lost a defend but gained a quickness. I like the power down in his case. I card was swapped for another. But, the same card types remain.

Depends on your set. We have many pretty strong decks in our collection so Obi is just one of the better decks but nothing more. And I still beleive the character deserves a powerful deck anyway. So for us her works pretty well and our biggest problem was that some of the original decks ended up beeing to weak in the grander scheme, so the upgrades made sence for us and made them fit in much better. Especially our Vader fix made the force he always deserved to be. But we really don't have any deck Obi included that is a sure winner all the time at all.

umondy said

I also much rather have decks with some stronger cards. Much more fun to play. All those A5's he now has are pretty weak and wouldn't excite me much playing him. :D

Our group mostly leaves Obi as is, the one card that I think has to be nerfed is FORCE CONTROL. The A7 is fine (though we reduce to A5) but moving all characters on the board up to 3 spaces is ridiculous. In fact, moving all characters on the board up to 3 spaces is a good card with no other effect, and is used for Bastila's BATTLE MEDITATION (plus she gets a card draw) and for Frodo's THE ONE RING. Adding that effect to an A7 is overpowered in 2v2 play, IMO.

Well, when you have a 5 attack and then you get to move 6 spaces, it's still strong. Always for a hit and run. You can play this without having defend cards in most cases. It's also much more accurate to Obi's actual power level.

True but whhhaaaaaaaat?! He destroyed the chosen one on top of his game! And don't tell me he did so only because he had the high ground ;)

So all of the discussion here has made me think: Should we be considering making at a new fan-voted expansion? I know 2022 is a while off still, but I don't think we necessarily have to wait that long. The new trilogy will end this year, I think it would be pretty cool if we add a 3rd set for the new characters (and one's that were missed, like Maloney's R2-D2). Obviously it's not *necessary*, but I do think it's a cool thing and a good way to bring the community together to work on something. Perhaps we can address any lingering issues with this set as well.

Rome, I meant to say, for Zam, that he only needs 1 Assassination. I like the amended 3x Sniper Shots. Zam's amended Sniper guarantees you can defeat a Battledroid in one attack; which is helpful for this deck.

But, if I were to start from scratch, I would give Jango 1x A9 Kamino Saber Dart to go along with his 1x Missile Launch. Zam would be cut to 3 cards in that instance. As for the 10YA, I would keep Flame Thrower. It's another do damage and move to avoid a counter attack. So, it's better than it seems.

As for the Emperor, his deck is beautifully designed and unique. I wouldn't change it for a second.

OBI_WAN_JOHN said

The one instance I really don't like YWD and the Emperor's other discards is when he is facing Mace Windu. The Emperor's deck is made to completely neutralize Mace's build up a full hand strategy, and thus, it doesn't accurately reflect Mace's win in the movie. Yes, Mace did win. The Emperor didn't let him. But, in the game, the Emperor wins most of the time.

As for other matchups, Jango fought Obi-Wan to a dead draw in the movie. But in the game it's the most lopsided matchup of all. But, Mace easily defeated Jango in the arena. Also, Obi-Wan gets whopped by Dooku twice in the movie. So, the powering down of Obi in the game is completely warranted.

Roman F said

I don't disagree with you, just note that the 10YA changes aren't intended to reflect the movies. They are intended to make all 12 decks roughly balanced in power, whether that's warranted by the films or not. Other groups have their own sets of tweaks based on making the decks better reflect the movies or just to make them more fun or whatever.

WOW!!!!! This would be so awesome!!! Any suggestions where to start with? So many possible angles to tackle this come into my mind but you are the man who has been around for the 10YA. :D

Roman F said

At first thought, I might take the same approach as last time: First decide on the 12 characters everyone wants to see, then vote on which decks you want to see for those characters. Of course, if there is a deck you particularly like then you vote for that character, even if that character isn't the one you would necessarily choose (e.g. Luminara in 10YA). A mix of characters from different sources is totally ok.
