10 Year Anniversary Tournament Set (redirected from 10 Year Anniversary Tournament Set Breakdown)

Page history last edited by Roman F 2 years, 3 months ago

The 10YA Tournament Set is a set of 24 balanced decks for tournament and casual play.  It is not a stand-alone set but is rather a set of modifications to 8 of the 12 original Hasbro decks, along with 2 of the 12, 10YA Custom Set decks to create a balanced set of 24 decks.  This set is ideal for use in League of Legends format tournaments where all decks need to be roughly equal in overall power level, but each can have relative strengths and weaknesses that interact with enemies and allies.  This format has been successfully used at GenCon, at Mike Maloney's Dencon tournaments, and some online Vassal tournaments.  In order to meet the intention that all decks win roughly 50% of the time, some of the original decks and custom decks were modified and all 24 decks were tested for balance.  If you're used to the original Epic Duels decks, there are fairly substantial changes to Obi-Wan, Palpatine, Jango and Vader, and noticeable changes to Han, Luke, Boba and Maul (all changes listed below).  All of these decks were deemed either too strong or too weak for League of Legends tournaments and were modified to bring them into the same power level as Anakin, Dooku, Mace and Yoda.

Notes:

- According to EDOL Statistics, in 1v1 duels, the best deck (Obi-Wan Kenbobi) wins about 78% of the time, whereas the weakest deck (Jango Fett) wins about 29% of the time, pretty far from the ideal 50% for Tournament decks in a 2v2 format, where Obi and Jango would probably have similar winning percentages.  Therefore, modifications had to be made.

- As opposed to trying to "fix" everything wrong with the game, the goal was to balance the game by making as few modifications to as few decks and as few cards as necessary while keeping the feel of the modified decks as close to their originals as possible.  On a few occasions, we replaced a card outright with another card from the same deck.

- We started with a group of commonly used tweaks, debated, and tested the selected tweaks repeatedly for balance along with other proposed ideas.

Obi-Wan, Palpatine and Darth Maul, listed in descending order of strength, were considered too strong, Obi-Wan almost ridiculously so.

- Jango, Vader, Luke, Han and Boba, listed in ascending order of strength, were considered too weak.

- From the 10YA Custom Set, Luminara was considered too strong and Tarkin was considered too weak.

- Alternatives to Palpatine's YOU WILL DIE were considered but we ultimately wanted to get away from the all-or-nothing nature of it.

- Tweaks to Jango's FLAMETHROWER were considered but it was ultimately tossed in favor of a second MISSILE LAUNCH, a common tweak.

- Changes to Chewbacca's IT'S NOT WISE, specifically increasing the movement to 6, were tested but deemed unnecessary.

- Changes to Yoda were tested but deemed unnecessary.

If you playtest this complete set and have any feedback about the tweaks, please leave a comment below!

Love this overview etc. Would have loved to have something like this when I started printing my expansions. Even though I fixed my original 12 a little different, I think that is just a matter of taste.

Yeah it took us 10 years to publish this, by then I think every group had already tweaked the originals a little differently. For example, my own group uses an entirely different set than these, but our purposes are entirely different. This set of tweaks has 2 specific purposes:

1. Make all 12 decks roughly equal. Changes are not made for any other purpose, e.g. to make Vader more fun or because “GIVE ORDERS” really would feel better with “draw a card” added to it. Vader is tweaked to be more powerful, Obi-Wan to be less. Dooku doesn’t need tweaks to be balanced, so he doesn’t get them.

2. Change as little as possible. We tried to take “taste” out of it by mostly adjusting values or replacing one card in a deck with another card from the same deck (e.g. replace FLAMETHROWER with a second MISSILE LAUNCH). I mean, you could make Jango more balanced by replacing one of Zam’s SNIPER SHOT cards with a powerful KOHOUN INFESTATION card – but that changes that deck in ways this set of tweaks didn’t want to. That gets into taste, which we didn't want to do.

Made all the tweaks except for Palpatine. I really don't think he is too strong. You Will Die is ridiculous and the Force Lightnings are great but outside of that, I really don't think he is too strong as is. Does everyone else really think he is too strong? Would take Darth Maul and some others over him any day

Hi charris, thanks for posting. Here's what I can tell you: In 172 1v1 duels among the old EDOL community, Palpatine won 64.9% of his matches, second only to Obi-Wan's 78.6% and just ahead of Maul's 63.5%. So while I can't tell you what "too strong" is, he is definitely much stronger than average. For a set where all the decks are to be roughly equal in power, he definitely needs to be made less powerful. Also, while our group does not, some find YWD to be a NPE -- Negative Play Experience. They just don't like the way it impacts the game. Personally, I also think Emperor is even better in 2v2 than he is in 1v1, whereas Maul, IMO, takes a hit in 2v2 where his lack of defense becomes a bigger liability, though I know groups who disagree with me. What we do know is that 1v1 results for both Emperor and Maul show both to be much better than average and therefore, in need of tweaks for this set. If you want to leave him as is, go ahead, but over time, I think you'll find him to be stronger than average.

Hi charris, I and my group we actually love Palpi the way he is. I don't think he is TOO strong, he is strong as he should be in my opinion and I don't beleive he is a NPE. I think his cards make it very intriguing to play against him as you always have to be aware not to collect to many cards and maybe play a little more aggrsssive as you normally would. One thing I may have to add, our house rules only allow to cause direct damage if the targeted character is within line of sight.
