Star Wars Epic Duels Wiki

Hasbro Board Game, released 2002, out of print.

This wiki was created as a reference and catalog for all things Star Wars Epic Duels and has become the primary site for Epic Duels content and discussion.  Our goal is to use this site as a repository of all user-created Epic Duels content:  new decks, new maps, new extensions to the online VASSAL Engine module for Epic Duels, plus alternate rules, tweaked decks and more. There are also theory-oriented sections for the hardcore Epic Duels fan that includes component design theories and strategies.

If you're brand new to the wiki, check out the Start Here page.  Or, click one of the links in the SideBar to the right, or use the Search box to find specific content.

This wiki is largely an open-source project, so users can login and create pages, and add information or comments to any current pages, including uploading their own Epic Duels creations to share. The administrators reserve the right to edit or remove any content.  If you'd like to contribute to the wiki, please read this first.

I'll be the first to comment on the FrontPage. This is a LONG overdue site, and I'm glad it's finally off the ground. I hope it becomes the definitive source for all things Epic Duels!

Hi to all!

I write from Italy and I'm a great Epic Duel's fan. My friends love the game too!
I expanded the original ED boardgame; now me and friends play ED with 53 decks, all high quality printed and laminated :)

Thanks to all the people who contribute with efforts to expand this great game.

I teach at an elementary school and I have introduced over 100 different 6th and 5th grade students to the game. My guidance counselor was thrilled at the relationships that were formed by students who never even spoke to each other prior to joining our Star Wars Epic Duels Club. A great site for a great game.

We have been playing for years. And we run an in person 2 on 2 tourney ever year. It grew to 24 players last year. This is a great game for expieranced and dabbling gamers alike.

I wasn't sure where to ask this, but is there any way to delete something that you have uploaded if you are not an admin?

Administrator said

Yes. Contact myself, or post a note on the forum and we'd be happy to delete any content for you.

Looking for new maps. I have maps from Dorkistan and Magnus, but many of the maps referenced here have expired links. Can anyboy tell me where to find these?

Unfortunately a lot of user content is not updated or maintained once it is uploaded to the wiki. Periodically the administrators comb through the entire wiki deleting outdated content. The Maps section is next on the list for an update!

Hi everyone. I've created some new decks and want to load them up to this site. But before I do, I want to put explanatory text on the front page of each deck. I'm using VASSAL. Once I turn it into a .pdf I can't write the text on it, so how do I do it? Thanks.

Yeh same here Tusken Raider I was wondering the same thing. If you find out let me know. You think you could give my deck a critique. I'll definitely critique your new ones when you post em if you want. Mine deck is Exar Kun Dark Lord of the Sith.

The Tusken Raider said

So I just created a page with two items - the information and the deck...seemed easiest. Will have to learn a little about Exar Kun before critiquing the deck methinks. I'm a big fan but seemingly pale in comparison to some! But the Tusken Raider deck is now added.

I am sure you guys would love your characters out there! If anyone knows please inform me at your earliest convenience. I'd rather not do anything to get in trouble. ha Thanks!

Hello everyone, I have just uploaded a zipped folder titled "Make Your Own Cards". It has .psd files for all types of cards. Anyone with basic knowledge of Photoshop can easily make new cards for any character. I have also made new decks for all the bounty hunters(from the 6 star wars movies) and quite a few other characters along with one map that I'll be uploading soon.

Hello SWEDs Wiki Community! I am a long time lurker here, first time poster on this site, and I am desperately trying to print out my own custom characters, (I have made 27 of them now), however, I can never get the deck backs lined up!

I use the Deck Designer found here by Corey Andola, and it is just superb. I need help from anyone of you here in getting some printing instructions. Perhaps a "How To Print Your Customs" is long-overdue in the "Component Design Articles" or reference "Section"?

Also, I would like to upload a few of my custom creations, as I think some of mine are very original, however, I don't know how to do that either. As you can tell by now, I am not a tech savy guy, but I absolutley love Star Wars and this game!

Hi Jared,

Welcome! If you are interested in uploading and sharing new content, I would recommend starting here: http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/page/9779496/How%20To%20Use%20Wiki

As for printing tips, here are a couple of old threads at the yahoo group from 2003 that address it: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/epicduels/message/3103 and http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/epicduels/message/2234

Also, the .DKD files you uploaded will be deleted shortly. If you have material to share, please upload .PDFs or Vassal extensions, both of which can be exported directly from the Deck Designer program.

Long time lurker myself. I've printed out 42 total decks, some I've created, but most have been from this workspace. I always copy and pasted it from the PDF file, put it in Word, centered it, then just took it to a place like Office Max or something similar to have them print it out on their heaviest cardstock. Works pretty well, and cost about $4 a deck. I tried messing around with a basic inkjet printer, but it didn't look nearly as nice and ended up costing more because of the price of ink cartons.

Also, I'm curious too. I uploaded a few decks (K'kruhk and Darth Stryfe) I made a month ago or so and their on the site, but I wasn't sure how to get them a link/page on the character section where they could be more easily viewed.

Darth Trumpetus said

at 3:27 pm on May 5, 2013

Welcome! It's always good to see new faces. The pages you made for K'kruhk and Darth Stryfe look great. Feel free to add their names to the character page and link to the pages you made. It should be pretty straight-forward to edit that character page: http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/page/9779390/Characters

Hey thanks for the prompt help there DT. I clicked on the links, however, and I was taken directly to the sign-in page on Yahoo. The threads aren't displayed and I do not have a Yahoo account nor wish to create one. Is there some other way I could read these printing tips? I am only having trouble at getting the backs of the cards to line up with the front of them.

Thanks again for your help DT. I will try to upload some of my works. I am not sure how to convert a file from Corey's Deck Designer program to a .pdf file either. I know I sound completley incompent with computers, which I think I am to a certain extent, however my age would not suggest that I would be!

I've had some extra free time these last few days, so I screen capped the conversation that people use for printing custom decks. You can see it at: http://imgur.com/O82ANt0

Also, in order to convert the file to a PDF, from the deck designer program... Go to file --> Export --> Deck to PDF; then choose your destination and file name. Hopefully this helps.

I'm still in the process of creating a deck for Lando from all of the amazing ideas you guys have posted here. I have a Lando/Lobot pairing, Gran Moff Tarkin/Storm Troopers pairing, Qui-gon Jinn/Gungans pairing, and Grievous/those shabby robots with the cloaks pairing to add to my game. I haven't done much customizing of this game, but recently acquired my friend's old copy (we used it play it back in the day) and wanted to add a little to it. Another reason why I joined this wiki was to let you all know I recently released the first half of my interview with Rob Daviau (co-designer of the game) and thought you might be interested to have a listen. The second half will be posted on July 26th. Here is a link to the first half (you can also find my podcast in iTunes "who, what, why? a game design podcast"): http://whowhatwhycast.tumblr.com/post/92018434809/s8-e05-thats-no-moon-its-a-minis-game . I just got this game and my friends and I already have questions regarding some of the rules. I was hoping to join and get some of them cleared up.

For instance and this may be obvious, can you place your attack card face down and play a special card that can be played "anytime" and resolve it before your opponent plays a defense card?

I am Tokyottalks2much and I would love some feedback on any of my decks! (I have posted links to them below) I try to think of new or out of the box decks from what came in the base game while maintaining a pleasing look and cool images. My card effect text comes from many years of playing Magic the Gathering so I hope they are easy to understand. Please help me balance the decks if you believe that they are over/under powered; they have been play tested. I am currently working on characters from Star Wars The old Republic.

Swishtail said

Or, if someone has the image files the PDFs for the decks were built from, I could create a project and share the link here.

Swishtail said

at 11:36 am on Dec 14, 2015

Worst case I can manually extract the images from the PDFs... But image resolution may be an issue, plus it would be very labor intensive. Of course, I could just be happy about printing the cards on 110 lb cardstock... But such an awesome game seems to deserve a glossy linen finish.

This isn't really a message board. You can try at the Forum, though I believe you have tried before. http://epicduels.fr.yuku.com/

I don't think anyone has Artscow files or at least they aren't widely available. A lot of us use Corey's Deck Designer Software so image files aren't easily available. Every deck has a .PDF is that not high enough rez for what you want to do? I print them out on 110lb cardstock and print the backs on the reverse side, and they're plenty good to play with.

Pete322 said

at 11:52 am on Jan 4, 2016

I have used artsscow to print 7 decks from here. I have found them to be an excellent service, and relatively cheap. You can keep checking their sales. I got most of my decks for around $7. Quality is quite good too.

Cbgssya said

How do u print them off from there

umondy said

at 10:06 am on May 22, 2016

Don't know where to post this, so I try it here:
Wouldn't it make sensce to update all the brocken "characters" links? There are many decks that link to outside pages that are unfortunately no longer exist. I think wiki is still a great resource for everybody stll or again enjoying this game and would hat to see it break down or however you want to call it.

Roman F said

at 7:12 pm on May 23, 2016

It would be easy enough to remove all the "dead" links, but actually updating them would require each individual deck creator to stop by and update the link to his deck. In many cases, they probably no longer host whatever website they were using to store their decks back in the day. If you want to de-link characters from "dead" links, knock yourself out.

Freaky Mutant Man said

at 8:52 pm on May 23, 2016

Personally, rather than deleting dead links, I'd suggest merely marking them as 'dead' on the page, perhaps separating them to a "Lost Decks" section. More for peace of mind than anything else; perhaps a deck author will drop by, see their deck(s) marked as 'lost,' think "hey, I still have that lying around," and proceed to re-upload it. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but I hate to see things disappear entirely from the internet.

Roman F said

at 8:21 am on May 26, 2016

Agree with FMM's proposal. I'm not about to audit the site or anything, nor create a "dead links" page, but feel free.
More likely, just anytime you come across a dead link, update the relevant link with a "dead link" note and hopefully the author will stop by at some point and see that the link needs to be updated.

umondy said

at 3:28 pm on May 26, 2016

Hm, why so complicated? I was more thinking about uploading the missing decks and linking to them instead of to a dead link...
Anything that speaks against that?

Freaky Mutant Man said

at 4:24 pm on May 26, 2016

That would work, too; no issue with that on my end. The only problem I can see is if an author wants to remove their decks; considering a lot of authors haven't been around for awhile, I don't think there would be much trouble with it, but just be willing to comply if an author comes around and requests their content be taken down.

Of course, this is Roman's site, so ultimately it'd be his call; I don't manage anything here, I just contribute every once in awhile.

umondy said

at 5:04 pm on May 27, 2016

That's how I see it. But don't know any good reason for somebody to be against it now. Like you said, it's Roman's call and I bet he has most of the missing decks anyway to replace them if he chooses to.

Roman F said

at 8:58 am on May 30, 2016

Hey guys, thanks for the ideas. It's not my site, it's a Wiki, so it belongs to everyone. As the administrator of this facility, err, site, if you want my vote: If you have the missing decks to upload (I do not in most cases), I think it's fine to go ahead and do so. Aside from a rare case, I think you'd be doing the author a service by re-uploading. If you don't have the deck to upload, just make a "dead link" note.

umondy said

at 5:15 am on May 31, 2016

Roman F said

You'd think that would exist somewhere, but I'm not actually sure that it does. Are there specific cards you need? If you really need a whole set, I have scans I can post at some point but not sure when I'll get around to it.

umondy said

at 2:36 am on Jul 28, 2016

Hahahaa, like Roman said. Such an obvious thing...but I haven't found them yet either. Would love to have them but I am to lazy to create them from scratch with the deck designer. Would be a good way to fix the original decks though. Something I thought about a million times also.
So if somebody got them I also would be more than happy about it :)

umondy said

There definately is a downlaod version of Kamino, with a fixed Slave I, as it seems to be a little to big on he original map. I BELEIVE I also have seen download versions of the other maps.

Ben said

at 12:27 pm on Aug 3, 2016

Heya team,

I have recreated the original unaltered 12 decks (albeit with with slightly different pictures and colorings, but other than that its the same) using the exact wording provided here on the corresponding ED page. Happy to upload them if it will help, but I don't really know how to do that. I'm part of this group, but do I need to be a part of the yahoo group as well to upload? And yeah, if anyone has access to quality downloadable versions of Kamino, Throne Room, Geonosis, and Carbon Freeze, pass the links my way if you don't mind.
As for those who wish to tweak the original decks, feel free to do so using the decks I'll upload (I can provide the dkd files too), but my friends and I are kind of purists and prefer the original 12 to be as they first appeared. Don't get me wrong, I'd like Vader to have more defense and for Obi-Wan to have SOME kind of weakness as much as anyone, but the mismatched, unbalanced quality of the decks is part of what makes it so fun and so challenging and so endlessly complex in team mode. And its much more satisfying to destroy a Yoda or Obi-Wan when you know how blasted hard it is to do so.

Roman F said

at 1:30 pm on Aug 3, 2016

- As far as original decks, did you recreate them in Deck Designer? Regardless, you can upload here using the "Upload a File" link at the top-right of the page. Membership in the Yahoo! group is entirely separate and does not matter.
- Regarding maps, I originally had very nice scans from which the Vassal maps were originally created. I'll see if I still have those but it's not likely. More likely, I'll have to re-scan them, and it will probably be a while before I do.
- Regarding tweaks, check out the 10 Year Anniversary Tournament Set. There are tweaks which make all of the original 12 decks roughly equal. If you want something other than "roughly equal," then best to come up with your own tweaks for your own group. You can check out geektopia.info for an example of the tweaks we use, but those are to our tastes, for the version of SWED we like to play. Anyone can use them but they're not for everyone.
- If you want to expand your ED set, you're in the right place. Start with the 10 Year Anniversary and Expanded Universe sets. The 10YA set in particular will introduce you to different designers and different flavors of deck-building and you can explore from there.

umondy said

at 2:39 am on Aug 4, 2016

Hey Ben,
that's great! I would love to have them as .dkd's. This way I could add the changes Roman is talking about and improve the overal playing experience with the original 12.
You could just upload them in the upload files section of the wiki, so I would be able to download them. :)
Thanks in advance.

Ben said

at 10:04 am on Aug 4, 2016

Hi there, thanks for your message. Yes, my friends and I have already explored the expanded decks and 10th anniversary and chosen the ones we deemed worthy of including in our game. Most decks out there are rather poorly created, it seems.
As for the original decks, as I said I'm not interested in tweaking the original decks. I like for them to remain as they are since that is the original vision of the game. Imbalanced decks are part of what makes it exciting.
If you are able to find/make those good scans of the original boards, I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks so much!

On the Ruined Jedi Temple Board, can you shoot over the possibly broken pillar space right next to the hole?

Binjovi said

at 8:07 am on Aug 5, 2016

I've always used it as fully blocking, but it does appear to be broken, so it would make some sense to be able to shoot through that space. In the end, however you and your playgroup decide to rule it is, of course, fine.

Ben said

Hey guys,

As requested, I have uploaded the PDFs and dkds for the 12 original unaltered decks that I made. In case anyone wants downloadable versions. These are non tweaked versions of the originals (different pics, etc. , but the card wording is the same as the published game). I also made SPACEBALLS: Epic Duels if anyone is interested in that.

Roman F said

at 8:10 pm on Aug 9, 2016

Btw I looked at my full-size scans, they're really not good enough to use for this purpose. It would be a challenge to get scans good enough to lay out into a usable deck, with text as clear as what we'd get out of Deck Designer. The downside to Deck Designer is that we'll probably never be able to recreate the backs of the originals. If anyone has a scanner and some time, he can see if he can scan really good backs. If that can be done, maybe the rest could be done at some point, but I'm not holding my breath. Probably better to go with Deck Designer versions, but we would need to come up with some usable backs.

Welcome to several new deck designers that have joined the Wik!. Love seeing new designers join and new decks posted.

At the same time, gang, while I have nothing against The Old Republic or Non-SW Materials, considering a NEW STAR WARS MOVIE just came out, it would be nice to see more activity around those characters at this time. If you made a deck that you like, that gets little use and/or is for a not-well-known character, consider rolling those ideas into a deck for a Rogue One or The Force Awakens character. Just my $0.02.

So it seems like the download issue on his site still hasn't really resolved itself since the last time this came up; like right now I click on the download link I'm supposed to, and no matter what I try on the following page I can't actually get anything to actually download.

Luckily, I already uploaded a back-up of his decks here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0lJIhPMlL-ZSHdWV0JiYUZaRU0/view

The R2-D2/C-3PO deck comes highly recommended for team games, and I rather like the designs for Quinlan Vos, Shaak Ti, and Padawan Obi-Wan.

Been checking this site out ever since my brother showed me Epic Duels. I never heard of it before and never played the original Star Wars version. My first game with it was the Smash Bros. Brawl expansion that he printed out and it's my favorite board game right now. Finally made an account here the other day and got accepted to the wiki today, thanks guys!

Roman F said

Welcome! Let me go ahead and recommend the Star Wars version. Also, if you haven't already, download and install Vassal onto your computer so you can play online (though hardly anyone does anymore) or even on your own. I suggest playing the original, unaltered version of Star Wars Epic Duels on Vassal at least before delving into fan-made SW content and fan-made non-SW content.

Diminished said

We have game nights and this is our main game now, I love it. I've been playing ED for almost a year now I think. Got Vassal awhile ago but don't really use it because it's dead on there. Wish more people would get into it. But yeah man I'll definitely check out the Star Wars decks, even though I'm not really into Star Wars. I know, it's blasphemy ahaha.

Awesome! What are your decks based off of?

I started a deck for Ryu from Breath of Fire 3. It's so hard to condense all the ideas to just a few. I want him to shred everything because it's my favorite game but I gotta keep it balanced ahaha. I'll probably end up making 4 or 5 different decks on him with different themes just to cover his entire skill set.

Wayne Piper said

Is there already a deck for, or a possibility of a deck for the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister Inquisitors from Star Wars Rebels? There are already decks for the Grand Inquisitor (season one) and Thrawn (season three), and I guess you could throw in "visits" from Vader, Maul, Asohka, and Obi Wan to make it interesting. :-) But, I would love to see the 5th bro and 7th sis to fill in the 2nd season. I would even take a stab at creating one if I knew where to start.

Freaky Mutant Man said

at 8:20 pm on Sep 7, 2017

It's something I've contemplated, but not something I've really tried a serious stab at; after all, we don't even have a Hera deck yet, and I'd rather get some satisfactory decks for the Ghost Crew before knocking out a deck for Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother. Of course, you're always welcome to try making decks of your own!

Hi everyone, I was wondering, do any of you have any house rules, and if so, what are they? I already have 1 (Draw a card at start of turn for free) but I want some more. Hope to see some good ones!

LordFortune said

at 4:45 pm on Dec 14, 2017

There’s a lot of common house rules listed here.

http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/page/9779495/House%20Rules

We always played deathmatches in our games. And we played to the last character, not just majors. Being able to pull a razor thin victory with a half-dead Clone Trooper is amazing.

One less common house rule we had is that melee characters couldn’t attack at an angle, even when adjacent. Only ranged characters could. It gave ranged characters more of an even playing field.

We also never went by the rule of discarding dead minor cards to heal. When a minor died, we just removed all their cards from the game. Because of this, when playing as Bobs Fett (my favorite original deck), I would play Greedo’s suicide attack to dump his cards as fast as possible so I could focus on Boba.

Hi all, I've made some updates to the Wiki:

- The Front Page, Start Here page, How to Use page and Reference page have all been updated and some content was added to the Reference section.
- The Expansions Page has been updated to include Game of Thrones and Harry Potter.
- Game of Thrones has been reorganized a bit and all the decks have been unified. Hope Sophist doesn't mind.
- I've updated my profile, avatar, and username so that I'm no longer the sneaky invisible commenter (that was fine before I was admin but times have changed).
- I'm pleased to announce that long time members umondy and FreakyMutantMan have accepted roles as co-administrators of the Wiki. I'm launching an original game in 2018 and need the help, but I'll be around.

I am in the process of recreating the Card art in Vector (In Adobe Illustrator) I have also identified the Correct Fonts for all the Type styles in every spot. Additionally i created a vector Logo of the "Epic Duels Game" Logo using the correct fonts so its cleaner and more precise. I should be completed with all Different Card types (minor char attack cards, specials, etc.) within a week or two. If anyone would like the Files i can provide them and the fonts that go with them in a zip file. What i would love to do i have all of the decks look more cohesive in the end. Let me know if this is helpful, either way i'm doing it for myself.

Roman F said

umondy said

Nathan R said

I would love to have a Separate Link to a list of a Comparable Figurine for each deck, like a master sheet. I know inside of the PDF of a deck there is a Printout of the Figurine, and usually they come from Star Wars Miniatures. But it would be nice to just have a list so a person could just Look at that and see what Decks have what figures.

umondy said

at 3:54 pm on Feb 3, 2018

That's exactly what I was thinking about for quite some time now but always was wondering if anyboy else would care for something like that. Maybe I actually will create something like this. Is just the question if there isn't a way to implement something like this in the wiki.

Roman F said

at 5:08 pm on Feb 3, 2018

The quick solution is to visit Aaron Shockley's bloomilk.com and use the character search function. For named characters, you'll see everything that's available. It's the characters that don't have a figure, like the newer ones, that's the challenge.

Since most figures can be easily found on bloomilk, I'm not sure we need a dedicated page on the Wiki. I think the few cases where figures aren't available can likely be discussed on a deck-by-deck bases on the individual character pages. If this doesn't work for some reason, we can explore adding a "figures' page.

umondy said

at 6:47 am on Feb 4, 2018

I think you said it before, you see the figure but you still have no clue which one it is as they don't list the name of the miniature. It sometimes takes forever to find the exact figure at miniature market, for example. Would save SO MUCH time if you just could enter the miniature you are looking for and not just hope to come across it browsing through the list.

Roman F said

at 10:37 pm on Feb 4, 2018

It's true, but only for the few characters (mostly newer ones) for whom there isn't a figure. For example, if you want a figure for Cade Skywalker, you can search for "Cade Skywalker" and find 3 figures for him, all called "Cade Skywalker." The problem only occurs when searching for, say, Rey, and you see a figure and can't identify it. Are there really so many of these cases that we need to create a "figures" page for them? If so, I'm open to it. If it's more like a dozen cases or so, I think we can handle it on the individual character pages. I'm not against creating the list that Nate and you are looking for, but how long of a list would it be?

umondy said

at 2:44 pm on Feb 8, 2018

hm really have to check to say how many there are but it definately not regards exclusively to the new characters I don't care about ;)
There are several custom decks from the EU that don't have miniatures or have miniatures that are not listed under the name of the character, like Coleman Trebors miniature. There are also some characters that have miniatures that are just not affordable like Revan, Darth Sion and several others were a list of nice alternative miniatures would be very welcome. Maybe I will start a list for my self and than we can deceide if it is of any use for other people and how to put it on the site.

For sure old news, but if you "show all comments" at the top of this page, this will make more sense. My reply to another comment used to have the old, now non-functioning link and I just wanted to update it. Because the reply is recent, it shows up at the bottom of the comments page like it's something new, as opposed to the reply that it is. I should probably include a link to the interview in the reference section.

Hmmm, I would need more info to help you. I've had more success using home printers but if that's not an option, I would go with FedEx Office over Staples. I'm not sure what "all the cards right next to each other" means. Is this your own deck, or one available here? If it's yours, did you create it in Deck Designer? Please upload, if you haven't already, so I can take a look. If you print a Deck Designer .PDF, it lays out cleanly into 6 pages, you want to print page 1, then pages 2-5 with Page 6 as the reverse side to those 4 pages. You can even go with blank card backs.

I'm in favor of porting all the Yahoo files here and I'm open to porting almost anything else, but I'm not going to make a project out of it. If umondy wants to, I won't stop him, but otherwise, if anyone sees a file he likes on another site, go ahead and download it, then please upload it here for everyone. Let's concentrate on Yahoo! because I think it's going the way of the dinosaur. I think almost everything else is at this site, the main exceptions I can think of are geetkopia.info, epicduels.com and Mike Maloney's weebly site, but I think we can count on those site owners to maintain those files and I recommend leaving those alone. Anything else, go ahead and port files over here, and I'll do the same.

Hey Everyone, I wasn't sure where to post this. But I've been searching for small miniatures from some of the new content, like Star Wars Rebels, and the movies that have been coming out with popular characters like Rey, Kylo Ren, Poe Dameron, etc.

I came across Disney Collector Packs, they are miniatures and have star wars ones for a few series if you can buy them off Ebay as individuals instead of the blind bags they are normally sold in.

Series 15: https://i.imgur.com/AzHyK9l.jpg
Series 17: https://i.imgur.com/CzwaV8c.jpg

They have a few other Star Wars series as well, but these seem to be the main ones for the newer characters that Wizards of the West Coast stopped making miniatures for. They look about the right size, I might try and find some cheap ones off ebay and test them out. Oh, and sorry about the low quality image on series 15, I couldn't find anything else. Just google a bit and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Hello and welcome! Figures are getting harder and harder to come by. For pre-Disney characters, Star Wars Miniatures by Wizards of the Coast covers pretty much every character in the SW universe, including the Expanded Universe. Thing is, SW Minis are hard to find these days, best bet is buying a lot off of eBay. If you want figs for the Disney characters, post your questions on the individual pages for those characters and we can discuss options there.

Roman F said

at 12:33 am on Sep 30, 2018

Yeah, there are a couple of involved steps to it but it can definitely be done. First, you have to put together the build files, then you have to copy over all the images. The build file can be opened and edited as a text file. You can copy the texts from multiple build files to a single file -- work with it a bit and you'll figure it out. Then you have to save it, probably as a text file just to have it but more importantly as a build file, which is best accomplished by replacing the old one, but you need to make a backup first. So if you're creating a build file with a lot of decks, this can get pretty involved. Then just make sure you get all the images into a single file as well. This generally isn't too hard but I feel like it hasn't always been super smooth for me either. Then you need to try the file out and I often find I've run into problems, then I have to go back to the build file and figure out something and/or tweak something, then try again. But that's how you do it.

Some exciting news! After interviewing Rob Daviau in early 2018, I recently requested an interview of the other creator of Epic Duels, Craig Van Ness. He agreed!
After talking with Rob and thinking some more, I have a hunch that Craig is more the Epic Duels guy than Rob, in no small part because he created the Transformers version of the game. Also, I plan to do this over the phone or skype, which should grant more time for a more in-depth discussion.
We haven't set a date yet, but it will be soon. If you have any particular questions for Craig, please post them as a reply, and I'll do my best to ask him.

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

Always two there are, no more, no less. A master and an apprentice.

But which was interviewed, the master or the apprentice?

This is awesome, kudos for doing this man. I’m sure those gentlemen are quite pleased to know their creation is still beloved to this day. Where’s the interview with Daviau?

Few questions:
1) Was this concept of a card battler with miniatures already in place before it was attached to the Star Wars brand, or was it something that was developed specifically for Star Wars Epic Duels first?

2) What happened? How come we never got an expansion or a Version 2?

3) Has he heard of the custom Epic Duels community? How does he feel about it? Would he still play it? CHALLENGE HIM!

4) What was his favorite deck to create, and if he could have included one more character for both Light and Dark side factions, who would they have been?

5) Does he enjoy the new set of Star Wars films?

6) If he could give the Epic Duels treatment to any current franchise, what would it be?

(We could even take a community poll to see if we can guess what he’d pick. I got dibs on Game of Thrones haha)

7) Would be be willing to revisit the game if he had the opportunity to, and if so, what would we need to do to get him there?

Also, please thank him from all of us for making such an outstanding game.

Hey just wondering for all of you who use custom or various other fan made maps and character.. do you have any kind of efficient way to deciding starting location for characters when they're not already labelled on the map?

Roman F said

at 9:54 am on Jan 8, 2019

Hi, there are 2 main ways I've seen of handling starting position:
1. Back line. This is what we use for tournament play. Your major character can start anywhere on the back line of the side you're defending. Minor characters must be placed adjacent to the major, and your major must be in a spot that allows for all minors to occupy an adjacent space. What's good about this is that it works for all custom maps, not all of which have named spaces.
2. Any starting spot. This is what our group uses. Your major character can start on any starting spot of the side you're defending. Minor characters must be placed adjacent to the major. When there are no named starting spots, we use the back line.

umondy said

at 9:14 am on Feb 5, 2019

We always play back line like you described in point #1. But #2 sounds like it could be fun and speed up gameplay. Have to try it next time we play.

Ken Kutcel said

at 9:58 am on Jan 8, 2019

Generally my group has everyone choose their deck. Then we roll. If in a four player game, choices would have the following options: choose board, go 1st, go 2nd, go 3rd, go 4th, place 1st, place 2nd, place 3rd, place 4th. Choice follows 'snake draft format', meaning choice goes from highest to lowest roll, but then is reversed for the second round of choosing (for example: highest roll, 2nd highest, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st). This system seems pretty equitable - there is debate as to what is the most advantageous strategy.

Sometimes in a larger group or on a whim, we will include the following choices as well: deck, teams/no team, 1-deck per player/2-decks per player. With more choices snake format is still followed.

If you cange everything and just keep the general idea and mechanic I don't see where it is "a dick move". People who say that have no clue what game you are talking about. It kinda is if you would say nobody is ever allowed to do any dungeon crawler except the one who brought it out first. Or do a Table top...or whatever genre you like to choose.

Roman F said

Thanks for reading. We can discuss in greater depth on the blog post, but I do think there's a way to re-do Epic Duels within the bounds of what's acceptable, just by making a few tweaks. The real issue, as I see it, is that I don't think Epic Duels would be fun with made-up characters in a made-up world.

umondy said

at 4:08 am on Feb 17, 2019

No need to discuss. Agree with you 100%. I probably would not be interested in any generic theme. I already don't care for all the non-Star Wars expansions. Still not finished with expanding my Star Wars game and will take time until everything is the way I would like it to be. If I play another game I much rather would play something completely different because thats the reason for me to play another game.

Here is a random thought: what if every character had uniqur deck and you combined them a la Smash Up to create teams

Darth Wolverine said

at 11:00 pm on Mar 2, 2019

I've experimented with this, and the TL;DR answer is "No."

For a detailed explanation:

The fun of Epic Duels is largely the idea of having fun, unique deck ideas with cards that compliment each other and create an experience that feels like you're playing the character in question. When you try to mix and match the decks, the end result is that one character ends up diluting the other. For example, if you tried to mix Yoda and Obi-Wan's decks, you would have to make sacrifices somewhere: you can't have both an effective hit-and-run deck and an effective defensive deck. If you tried to mix Darth Maul and the Emperor, you would run into the same problem: you can't have both a resource denial deck and a deck based on multiple free actions.

So, to make sure your deck works effectively no matter who's in it, you would have to make all the cards complimentary to all other cards, which is going to keep you from doing interesting effects for each character and leave you with a simple deck design that lacks real character. Not optimal, and very boring.

I originally tried this approach while trying to create X-Men decks, since I couldn't decide who I wanted to pair with anyone. The results were as I described above: disastrous.

The best way to create a viable team in Epic Duels is to do 2v2 (the best way to play Duels, in my opinion).

For pdfs it makes senses to either re-upload if possible and mark as missing if not, on the off chance someone who has the deck will see it and re-upload it. But with Vassal decks I can't remember ever seeing someone ask for one to be restored. I have a few missing Vassal decks I could upload like the EU expansion or some Dorkistan decks, but would there be a point if no one plays them? My thinking is to leave functioning Vassal links alone and just remove any dead ones.

Just bought this game off ebay. It was listed as used, only missing 3 figures. Going through the cards and I noticed several things that make me uneasy. To start, many of the cards had messed up borders, spacing with text is off, the text are different on certain cards compared to others. There is some coloration differences between cards of the same deck. Images don't line up, and some of the text on cards are blurry.

Was the quality of this game that bad or have I been scammed with fakes/custom cards? Any information would be much appreciated.

As best I can tell, you got a legit game. Hasbro quality was never the highest. In hindsight, what Epic Duels did most remarkably was offer a game for $20 with 372 cards, 2 double-sided boards, and a set of painted, not-great-but-plenty-good-enough figures.

Whatever figures you're missing, you can replace with Star Wars Miniatures, if you can still find them. Or hit me up, I might have some spares I can send you.

DarthTyranus said

Thanks for your help.

When through the game and it's missing the instructions, 7 wound markers, and the figures of han, padme, and clone trooper (3 markers on base). Wouldn't happen to have any of those would you?

Roman F said

at 6:15 pm on Mar 19, 2019

I would really recommend getting the Star Wars Minis for those. There are several sculpts of Han and Padme, so they shouldn't cost a fortune. Clone Troopers are super cheap, as well. Here's a Han figure for $2: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WotC-Star-Wars-Miniatures-Han-Solo-Rogue-Alliance-Empire-07-60-Rebel-Rare/143019042272?hash=item214c9965e0:g:-ygAAOSw5atb8j2t

Here's a Padme for under $8: https://www.ebay.com/itm/17-Padme-Amidala-Senator-The-Clone-Wars-Star-Wars-Miniatures-NM/333088728075?hash=item4d8da2a40b:g:kF0AAOSwWtpccNqq

If you still end up short, let me know and I'll get you what you need, with the exception of Padme. I have one, plus one backup and need them both :)

Awesome post Roman! Really enjoyed reading it and looking forward to part two. I am indeed a little sad to have missed the golden age of the game. The good thing is I immediately ran into tons of available content. That is a cool luxury to have. By the way I have asked me that for quite some time now, was your epic 20v20 battle exciting or boring as hell? It probably took forever to wait for your turn?

Roman F said

at 8:30 am on May 3, 2019

Thanks! I am sad for all of you that missed the Golden Age of tournaments but the flip side is, the later you've arrived, the more content you've had available. The 10YA set, for example, wasn't available until well after the golden age had ended. I'm sad the 10YA never made its way into an official tournament, at least none that I've been part of, but I'm thrilled to see it available on Tabletop Simulator. It was intended for that sort of thing.

If the 20v20 battle had gone better, we'd have done it again. There were only 4 players, and I don't think we even divided the decks up as 10 per person, it was more like, our team's turn, we'd take actions for one deck, then the other team would take actions for its deck, etc. So there wasn't much down time. However, yes, it took a long time to complete, more than a single night. Even though we didn't touch it between sessions, upon returning, it was tough to keep track of everything. We definitely made a lot of mistakes, not skipping turns when we should have, etc. When it ended it was basically impossible to crown a legit winner of the contest due to all the mistakes.

Would appreciate comments on the blog itself as well as here.

I did post what's probably 99% finished in terms of gameplay and deck composition a few weeks ago but it may have been buried in a fairly active period:

http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/file/fetch/133130550/Game%20of%20Thrones%20Complete%20Expansion.pdf?fbclid=IwAR2OVyuzl79a-Ytc-kihu5ItnwVeKZZmU__931keSjCeLat4vqFa-nRX40A

Most of the changes from here will be mostly cosmetic. Aside from changing Joffrey's Whitecloaks for a different power offense (having a Mace Windu battlemind clone, doesn't make much sense in a deck without drawing ability imo), and changing Robert's Rebellion.. maybe to just affect basic combat cards. Right now its OP combined with Its a Great Crime. That and I'll be tweaking the tribute cost of the field cards after much play testing cause they were pretty much guess work to start.

The cards I posted in the image above with an inverted black background/white text are what I'm considering 'signature cards'. These are the cards most decks have 3 of (some exceptions 2), and are the bread and butter, most powerful cards in the deck. Right now its purely cosmetic, but in my future concept of event cards a characters signature card gets altered to be more powerful when a player achieves an in game objective. Eg. an event like 'damage an opponent in combat and with a special card in one turn' would result in a card Tyrion's Lannister always pay their debts having a 3def value instead of forcing him to take full damage.

I briefly considered changing all cards to this black version, but I can't justify the extra cost of the black ink, and reprinting all 20 decks lol. That and it looks great in contrast with some deck colours and terrible with others. Right now its just a useful way of showing new players these are their core cards. I also want to put some sort of symbols on special cards to signify how many there are in a deck. Something like star = 1 per deck, diamond = 2, circle = 3, but I don't want to steal from pokemon lol.

umondy said

at 2:14 am on Jun 12, 2019

Hey thanks for that direct link. It looks very cool and I will take a closer look when I have some time. Stuff like that always makes me feel stupid for not coming up with that on my own. I love all the ideas you included. Of course, why not use the SPECIAL text space for more and different cards?! That is a great concept. Putting cards on the board or field like you call it. Has always been around in some way but always been difficult to spell out and all that. Now it is super easy the way you do it. Also to give some infos what the go to cards are and how many of those cards are in one deck. It is SO FREAKING SIMPLE but so GREAT! When you have a set of 150+ active decks like I have in no way you always remember all of that and it makes it so much better to play a deck the right way without studying it endlessly before starting a game. This should be so obvious but took us so long until you put it on here.

I absolutely get your problem of not wanting to reprint everything. I encountered this stuff SO many times. Where I had to reprint stuff, etc. Even now after seeing all your great stuff I get the feeling I have to edit ALL my decks and reprint them :D :D :D

Can't wait to take a closer look and maybe even adopting some of your ideas into my Star Wars decks.
Cheers and big thanks again from me and the whole community!

I was wondering when that was going to happen with so much trafficlately. I've got some free time to move my Marvel decks off-site today, so I'll do that.

I'd like to politely suggest that any non Star Wars material, such as the Game of Thrones content and even the Smash Bros content, be moved to seperate sites to free up space. It's simple enough to do, and I'd like to think we're all supportive enough of our work that we can take the extra clicks to get the content we want.

Roman F said

I think that's a good suggestion. We have space (for now) at geektopiagames.com, and it can fill some of the hosting role that epicduels.com used to fill.

We're over 70 games played at this point, have travelling trophies, custom boards, etc. It's all fairly insane but fun.

Next month we'll do our annual "Singles Tournament". We'll have 32 individual Duelers with four entries each (two light side, two dark side). That makes for 128 entries, twice the size of the NCAA tournament. We use each board for the four "regions", thus the final four are the winners for each board.

Thanks! Sorry for the delayed response to you reaching out. Duels is very much alive in here in Waco, TX. I held the first 12-Way Duel back in 2002 when I lived in Indiana. I had a different league going when I was in Tennessee back in 2007-09, but nothing compared to how it's taken off here in Texas. My 10 year old (she turned 11 the next day) won our May Duel and that might have been my proudest moment as her father, lol...

I've recently been able to figure out how to assemble some half decent maps. I'm not great at it or anything yet but I'm considering do a short write-up to give those interested something to work with.

Yeah not bad! Would appreciate a write up. Never been able to figure it out myself.

Hey all. I know this isn't Epic Duels related, but I'm the guy that created the Deck Designer and now I'd like your help with my first Kickstarter: http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/page/134609859/Capital%20Vices%20Micro-Game%20Kickstarter

We're playing our annual singles tournament next weekend - 32 Duelers, you get four different characters/chances to play! You can check out the blog to see the preview post. I made it to the finals last year but my Yoda lost to Maul on Geonosis...

Space: The Final Frontier. Our Wiki is running out of space. I doubt it can be increased without spending money, which I'm not about to do (when I sell through my 3rd printing of Cage Match, years from now, I'll consider it). If you have content on the Wiki, please determine if any of it is obsolete and can be moved elsewhere. Even if it is obsolete, I don't like the idea of removing content but in some cases deleting the content may make sense. Please consider it. Feel free to ask questions or make other suggestions as to how best to free up space for new decks.

Well adios to Yahoo! groups. That Epic Duels group was one of the very first online groups I was ever part of, I'm sad to see it go, even if lost most of it's value years ago. Still liked having the storage too.

Has anyone created a Discord group for this by chance? If not is there any interest in doing so? Not for anything specific, just to discuss anything about the game (balancing decks or whatever).

JAG18 said

at 1:46 pm on Jan 20, 2020

To my knowledge, no one ever has. I know this came up a few months ago on the front page, but the consensus back then was that there wasn't enough interest in the game to justify the creation of one (although I don't know if that's still true or not).

MiThiKaL said

at 2:08 pm on Jan 20, 2020

I feel it is at least a try, cant hurt anything. Its free to make a server and if it doesn't work out, everyone can just abandon it.

MiThiKaL said

at 2:21 pm on Jan 20, 2020

It could potentially have more members than expected. People may not have something worth posting to the page here, but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't want to be involved with the community. May allow us to grow the fan base even more and get to know the members better. Of course, it wouldn't replace the PBworks page since their completely different platforms with different functions.

P.S. Not being able to edit is rough, cant imagine why that isn't a feature yet...

JAG18 said

at 2:43 pm on Jan 20, 2020

Hey, man if you want to then go for it; you'll never know how far you'll get until you try.

And yes, the lack of an edit function is stupid and annoying. :/

What is a discord group?

MiThiKaL said

at 2:23 pm on Jan 20, 2020

Basically a chat room with text and/or voice chat. Its typically used for gaming communities. You can create a server for anything tho.

MiThiKaL said

Well I went ahead and made a discord for this, not sure how it’ll turn out but it’s worth a shot. Any moderators here are welcome to be premiered Admin access on the server, let me know if you are interested.

I've written a supplement program for Vassal that will add a Prototype trait to all cards in a deck by editing the buildFile automatically. I was just using it for myself because I was tired of manually adding prototypes to 31 cards in all of my Extension Decks. But if anyone else was interested in using it I have no problem uploading it. It's technically finished and does what I wanted it to do, but I might make make a few minor changes to it. Is something like that okay to upload?

Roman F said

at 10:47 am on May 14, 2020

Great! Please upload to the Deck Designer page under "Extras". There's already one addition to it, you could use bullet points for that one and for yours.

Heads up, we are moving all non-SW content to a new Wiki because we're running out of space. It's like the old days of multiple Yahoo! groups.

umondy said

at 1:48 am on Jun 20, 2020

Sorry, that is my fault. Should have put some notice up here that we are moving stuff and that it takes a few days at least. Nothing will be deleted wizhout being first uploaded to the new page. I will puz the link up in the sidebar as soon as most stuff is done. I beleive the new space qill be much better for all the non star wars content. Enough room to really sort it out and make it more accessible. Right now it is a little like an afterthought and there are so many great expansions including yours, I beleive the deserve a better presentation.

I have an original version of this game from back when we played it with friends in 2002. However, over the years I’ve lost some pieces. Is there anywhere I can get a card list to see the original cars so I can play it? I have the original board and a number of characters so it’s not just wanting to get the game for free but understand there still may be issues with that.

tpinkman13 said

at 11:50 am on Aug 13, 2021

Hey Marc, I am not sure of the best way to do this. This page has mostly fan-made decks or tweaks to the original. Each deck has 31 cards (12 special and power combat), so maybe you could start by counting each deck and figure out how many you are missing and from what decks. I could help piece it together for you after that, feel free to shoot me an email if you want at tpinkman13@gmail.com

Marc said

umondy said

you can find all the card texts in the component design section under 'card text'.
Other than that you could join the discord, I bet there are ppl that could help you out for anything else you need.

JAG18 said

at 6:31 pm on Aug 13, 2021

Actually, card text is a page about how to write talent cards like the original decks. The page that has all the text from the original cards is called "Deck Descriptions": http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/page/9779427/Deck%20Descriptions

Any particular reason my Marvel/DC decks were deleted but then reuploaded under someone else’s name? I’ve got more decks, but am hesitant to share now.

JAG18 said

at 7:46 pm on Jan 27, 2022

A couple of years ago all non-Star Wars decks were deleted and re-uploaded onto the Epic Duels2 wiki (link in sidebar) to save space. You can find your decks over on that site.

DarthJake said

at 7:45 am on Jan 28, 2022

I can still see them on this original page. But no credit was given to me is my point. Obviously these aren’t for sale nor copyrighted by any means. Still, it’s a bit aggravating to not be credited with creating the decks in the first place. Second, I don’t see any links to this other page in my sidebar. I typed epicduels2.pbworks.com & I assume that’s the new page? However, like I said, I can still see my deck on this original wiki & the new page. Which means it was deleted here, then reuploaded under a different name for no reason. Not the worst thing to ever happen, just disappointed & irked to not have any credit as it took a lot of time to create & test our decks.

JAG18 said

at 10:50 am on Jan 28, 2022

Here is a link to the non-SW wiki: http://epicduels2.pbworks.com/w/page/140429532/FrontPage There is a page for your decks in the "Comic Expansions" section.

Can you post a link to the files on this wiki that you're seeing? The only Marvel/DC related content I can find on here is this page: http://epicduels.pbworks.com/w/page/103710813/Marvel%20Comics%20Duels

umondy said

at 2:18 pm on Jan 28, 2022

If anything was done not to your liking please let me know. It is exactly like JAG18 said. It was just an acrtion to create more space for Star Wars AND all the other Epic Duels content. It was never meant to take any credit away from anybody. If that happened I am sorry as it probably was my fault. I hope this does not discourage you to share more of your ideas and would ask you instead to help me sort out what was wrong and needs to be changed. Just you know, ALL Non-Star Wars content is supposed to be put on the Non-Star Wars Wiki now. I am actually surprised you could still find that stuff on here as this should not be the case.

DarthJake said

at 11:33 pm on Jan 28, 2022

That’s my bad. When I was first looking at these I was on my phone and hitting a link that sent me to the new wiki without realizing it. I appreciate you clarifying or affirming what JAG18 said. It does look like the deck was untouched since my last upload. We’ve played a few more times & think they’re pretty balanced. It’s one of the Marvel/DC decks. The one with Thor/Goats & CapAmerica/Snipers. I do have some new decks we’ve been testing, from a tv show that I’ll upload as soon as we can test it again. And I do have a few of my own that I’ve been working on privately that I’ll post soon, too. Thanks for the explanation & consider the matter resolved.
